Friends of Nursing

For many patients and family members, the nurse is the hospital.

Today our excellent reputation and ability to provide the highest-quality care is being threatened by a critical nursing shortage. Local nursing vacancy rates are now greater than 15% and expected to worsen. Besides fewer people entering the nursing field, increasing numbers of opportunities for nurses are available outside of hospital settings.

Our challenge is to provide a working environment that will attract and keep the very best nurses at Virginia Hospital Center. The Friends of Nursing Fund exists to provide a way to create that environment by refining and expanding current recruitment and retention programs.

Friends of Nursing:

• Gives our nurses opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills via scholarships, preceptorships, on-site lectures and continuing education workshops.
• Recognizes and rewards dedication to patient care by presenting annual excellence awards for outstanding nursing practice.
• Promotes excellence in clinical practice and provides a way for patients and family members to say "thank you" to nurses who may have impacted their lives or that of someone they care about. You can make a contribution online or by mail to Friends of Nursing.
